Sutherland Welles Ltd.
Pure High Lustre Polymerized Tung Oil
The perfect choice when creating the finest hand-rubbed finish.
Polymerized
Tung Oil finishes are hard yet flexible, waterproof and impervious to
alcohol and many food acids. As a penetrating oil, it allows wood to
continue its aging process and to develop its patina. The wood's rich
natural color is enhanced while the wood is nurtured with Polymerized
Tung oil.
Sutherland Wells has developed a unique process of polymerization involving
"cooking" a natural vegetable oil, called tung oil, to its
maximum thermal threshold. This sophisticated polymerization process
develops both the ultimate hand-rubbed sheen and improves the curing.
The result is that their High Lustre Polymerized Tung Oil produces a
quality finish without adding varnishes or urethanes.
Polymerization, when done right, is an expensive process. When
done properly it produces tung oil that has long-lasting durability
and a gorgeous sheen. But, if the process isnt well controlled
the oil solidifies and the entire batch is lost.

The difficulty and expense of a proper tung oil polymerization process
leads most companies to formulate their tung oil with modifiers. This
simplifies polymerization, but it adds to the toxicity of the finish
and inhibits the penetration of the oil into the wood. It also results
in a finish that takes a long time to dry and cure. As far as long-term
durability -- with the cheaper process over time the varnishes and urethanes
discolor and deteriorate, degrading the finish.
The
Sutherland Wells' polymerization process does not add toxic materials
to the tung oil finish and it reduces the curing time. The driers
used in their High Lustre Polymerized Tung Oil have been researched
and found to be of the lowest toxicity available.
Polymerized Tung Oil must also be formulated with solvents to thin
the oil to maximize its workability and penetration. Sutherland Wells
High Lustre Polymerized Tung Oil uses the purest solvents available,
reducing the environmental impact and minimizing a finishers exposure
to toxic fumes and chemicals. When the formulation is complete, the
result is a Polymerized Tung Oil finish that is both finisher-friendly
and environmentally responsible.

Surface Preparation & Application
The wood should be sanded to 320 grit and be free of dust and foreign
matter. Application should be done between 55 degrees F and 75 degrees
F with the humidity below 65%. Mix only enough High Lustre Polymerized
Tung Oil with turpentine (1 to 1 ratio) to yield enough liquid for your
first coat. Apply liberally with a natural bristle brush and let stand
for 15 minutes. Wipe with a clean cloth and let cure for 8 hours. Buff
with a fine woven pad and wipe with a clean cloth. Then apply undiluted
High Lustre Polymerized Tung Oil thinly with a natural bristle brush.
Allow 10-15 minutes for the Polymerized Tung Oil to penetrate, and
then use a clean rag or cheesecloth to wipe the remaining Polymerized
Tung Oil off using a circular motion. Keep changing the area of the
rag to a dry spot to pick up all traces of the Polymerized Tung Oil.
Your final wipe should be in the direction of the grain of the wood.
Allow 12-24 hours for the coat to both dry and cure. Successive coats
are applied using the technique described above.
If the surface should tack-up before you wipe it off, simply apply
more Polymerized Tung Oil and wipe off immediately and thoroughly.
Cure Test: To avoid STREAKING AND FLASHING in the finish perform
the cure test prior to applying a coat of finish. Streaking and flashing
are the appearance of dull spots in the finish. This occurs when moisture
is trapped in the layers of finish due to insufficient curing time.
Push your finger tips against the grain of the wood over various parts
of the surface to be re-coated. If they glide easily over the surface
you are ready to apply your next coat. If there is any "grab"or
friction felt, you will need to wait longer for this coat to cure. Repeat
the cure test every two-four hours until your fingers slip easily across
the surface.
