Millie's Polymerization And FormulationThe advantage of tung oil is that as it dries and cures the molecules form a tight bond. The tight bonding makes the surface waterproof and impervious to many chemicals. The bonding also gives flexibility to the surface, making it capable of withstanding wear and tear. Sutherland Welles Ltd., the maker of Millie's finishes, has created a unique proprietary process of polymerization that strengthens the tung oils natural bonding. There are other manufacturers of polymerized tung oil. But they don't do it like Millie's and as a result many of them need to add varnishes and urethanes to improve the hardness, durability, and luster of the finish. This adds toxicity to the finish, inhibits the penetration of the oil into the wood, and slows the drying and curing time. The polymerization process used for Millie's All-Purpose Penetrating Oil require precision control and is highly sophisticated. It "cooks" the pure tung oil to its maximum thermal threshold. Controlling the 'cooking" and the "cooling" must be done precisely and is an expensive process. But the result is a finishing oil with maximum durability and a gorgeous sheen. Not only is the polymerizing process expensive, if the process isnt precisely controlled, the oil solidifies and the entire batch is lost. Because of the difficulty and expense most other companies formulate their tung oil using modifiers. It's the easy way, but not they way to have an all-nature finish that lasts. With a cheaper process and formulation, over time the varnishes and urethanes discolor and deteriorate, and the quality of the finish is lost. There are no driers in Millie's All-Purpose Penetrating Oil, therefore there is no set-up time or cure time between applications. The surface is treated as a sponge. Multiple coats of Millies can be is applied until the surface is saturated and the oil accumulates on the surface. No wiping or rubbing is required until the final coat.
