Application of Millie's All-Purpose Tung Oil On Wood

Millie's All-Purpose Tung OilFor the best results use Millie's All-Purpose Penetrating Oil on new, unfinished, wood surfaces. This gives the maximum saturation of the tung oil and results in maximum protection.

The final sanding of new wood surfaces should be no higher then 180/200 grit. For wood turnings start applying Millie’s Tung Oil at around 120 grit. Then polish off to final sanding and apply a thin, hand wiped coat as a topcoat.

Application Tools

Millie’s All-Purpose Tung Oil can be applied with a clean natural bristle brush. Foam brushes also work well.

Tung Oil Application Tips

To increase penetration warming Millie’s Tung Oil by setting your the container of Millie’s into another pail of hot water.

To apply, flood coat the wood so the entire surface is wet with Millie’s and allow that coat to be absorbed. Most wood species will absorb three applications.

You may re-coat as soon as the previous coat is absorbed. There is no need to wait for the surface to dry or cure.

When the absorption time becomes longer, the wood has reached its saturation point. The excess tung oil will make the wood surface feel gummy. This is the result of excess tung oil laying on the top of the wood.

Tung Oil Application Final Step

The final step is to apply one last coat of Millie’s in the same manner, but using less oil. Use just enough tung oil to cover the entire surface. Allow 10-15 minutes (or less) for this freshly applied coat to saturate and dissolve the excess oil that has gummed up on the surface.

Use a #0 or #00 steel wool pad and rub the wet surface vigorously using a circular motion. Buffing removes the burr of the wood and builds the sheen on the surface. Replace the steel wool pad when it becomes saturated with tung oil.

The final wipe should be done with a clean soft rag to pick up any excess tung oil that was not absorbed by the steel wool. Wipe in the direction of the grain.

After the final wipe, the wood should be completely dry to the touch. All of the tung oil should be completely and thoroughly removed from all surfaces.

Allow approximately 72 hours for the surface to cure before using.
